How to Configure Peplink Layer 2 SpeedFusion VPN

21/10/2020

SpeedFusion and PepVPN can operate in layer 2 mode, bridging both ends of a VPN to create a single Ethernet LAN. This allows you to extend your local network and easily run applications that are LAN-only or difficult to route, such as:

  • Zeroconf / Bonjour
  • AirPlay
  • AirPrint
  • Windows printer and file sharing network discovery

To use this feature, navigate to Network > Network Settings and select the interface you wish to bridge

Peplink Forward Error Correction (FEC)

21/10/2020

Available from firmware version 8.0 for Peplink routers with a SpeedFusion WAN Smoothing license.

Introduction

When using multicast applications on lossy WAN connections the performance can suffer. To overcome these problems Peplink introduced WAN smoothing, but WAN smoothing has an overhead of at least 50%.
This is not always desirable when there isn’t enough bandwidth available. Peplink has therefore introduced Forward Error Correction in Firmware 8.0
FEC is a cousin of WAN smoothing but it consumes less data. It is useful for bandwidth sensitive applications such as mobile streaming.

What is SD-WAN?

06/10/2020

Software-Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN) is a revolutionary way to approach the simplification of branch office networking and assure optimal application performance by using centrally controlled and managed WAN virtualization.
Unlike traditional WANs, SD-WAN delivers increased network agility and cost reduction. Software-Defined WAN has its roots in Software-Defined Networking (SDN), the underlying principle of which is to abstract the network hardware and transport characteristics from the applications that use the network.

Combine Multiple LTE, WiFi and VSAT for Reliable and Fast Onboard Connectivity.

Reliable Internet connectivity can provide enhanced enjoyment onboard and increased navigational capabilities (nautical charts, weather reports – or the location of the nearest marina), additional entertainment for the guests and crew (IP Radio/TV, news, social media) as well as secure corporate communications (VoIP, email and messaging). However getting reliable internet connectivity at sea has a number of specific challenges particular to this difficult and ever-changing environment.

Configuring 1+1 Backup by High Availability (HA) on Peplink

23/09/2020

1+1 Backup requires a pair of Peplink Balance devices or MAX 700/HD, operating in active-standby mode. When the master device is down, the slave device takes over and handles all the LAN traffic.

Peplink Balance 210 or above, MAX 700/HD support High Availability (HA) failover between two Balance/MAX devices based on Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP). Periodic VRRP advertisement packets are sent out from the master device to VRRP-specific IP multicast addresses. The slave device assumes the master device’s responsibilities when these messages have not been heard from for a pre-defined time interval.
